What is this?

The purpose of this blog is to document my upcoming travels in which I will be attempting to travel overland (car/bus/train) and by boat from bali (Indonesia) to london (United Kingdom) with no more than $5000 australian dollars.

The purpose for the challenge is to firstly prove to myself that it is a lot cheaper and easier to travel great distances over a lengthy period of time through asia and parts of europe than what many people assume, while at the same time ensuring that the experience is fulfilling, culturally nourishing and eventful; and secondly to inspire many of my friends that it can be done while having fun and gaining a ton of perspective on life, it is simply society’s comfort barrier which restricts us from making this step.

Mind you, I am in a perfect situation in my life to take upon this task:
– I have no debt
– I am not in a relationship
– I have practically completed my tertiary education
– I am leaving a casual work position after acquiring adequate funds
– I have no children or family ties holding me back

When looking over this I thought to myself that this could very well be the last time in my life that I am truly free.

The purpose of the travel is to see the beauty of some of the poorer yet culturally unique parts of the world before they are assimilated by western and corporate influence.
In addition to this, the what seems to be nigh inevitable global warming scenario within the next 40 years will leave many of the world’s coastal areas flooded, with other areas suffering intense weather disruptions. I would like to take a mental snapshop of the currently blissfully beautiful world of the present day, before things turn bad.

Now that all has been said that needs to, I’d just like to let you all know that this plan may not work, I’m not making any promises or bets; I just want to see how far I can get.

No real route, No real plans. small backpack.

Flying out on the 17th of April.

I’ll keep you posted :P (which may or may not be often)

** To Note for those who don’t know me: I have been overland through south east asia/china and back, a few years ago, it took 3.5months and cost $3000; I traveled with a small 7kg hand luggage bag, old blog can be found here: http://nicgoestoasia.wordpress.com and photos for the trip are on my Flickr page
